Tasmanian team competing at the Australian U19s Boxing Championships

Published Sat 07 May 2016

On Thursday 12th to Sunday 15th May, ten Tasmanian athletes will participate in the Australian U19s National Amateur Boxing Championships on the Gold Coast.

Recently the team got together with the state coach, Craig Woods to train at Campbell Town, where the boxers voted Dylan Cochrane to be the team Captain. Dylan began his amateur boxing career at 12 years old, has competed 19 times and has been selected to represent Tasmania four times at the nationals. Dylan aspires to represent Australia at the Olympics and then turn professional.

Also a special mention to the only female athlete in our team this year, Erika Creely. Erika began competing at 14 years old with her coach Gavin O’Callaghan from O’Callaghans Boxing Club in Penguin. With women’s boxing being introduced to the Olympics in 2012, we hope to see Erika qualify for the pinnacle of amateur boxing someday. Regardless, Erika is an athlete with a bright future!
